Victor Lai: An Epic Victory at the 2026 POLYTRON Indonesia Open

Outstanding Canadian badminton player Victor Lai has been crowned champion in the Men’s Singles category of the POLYTRON Indonesia Open 2026, played from June 2nd to 7th, following an impeccable run against the best athletes around the world.

Victor Lai started the tournament against Lin Chun Li (Chinese Taipei), the 9th in the world ranking, a demonstration of how hard the event would be. Victor won the first game with a great performance in the second half. However, Lin woke up in the next game and started to get unanswerable points. To the Canadians’ delight, Lai woke up and started a run that didn’t stop until winning the match (21-12, 21-18).

The next round brought the Canadian against the Japanese Koki Watanabe. On this occasion, Victor had no problem defeating him; Watanabe didn’t score more than ten points (21-10, 21-9). Similarly, the Quarterfinals against France’s Toma Popov were managed with splendid authority by the North American (21-14, 21-8).

To continue the feat, Victor had to face another Chinese Taipei representative. Across from him: Chou Chen, who, being the world number 6, had the same objective as Lai. It was the decisive duel of the day, a display of skill by two players who knew the importance of the semifinal, a rematch of the Asian’s victory last year. The duel was intense; Victor Lai would start by taking the lead, gaining the necessary advantage to take the first game by the bare minimum. Chen would not take long to answer back, taking a second game with a significant push in its second half. Already in the third game, with both players certainly exhausted, Victor showcased his resilience, securing the lead and not letting go until he earned his place in the final (21-19, 19-21, 21-19).

The final saw Victor Lai maintain his superlative level, facing him against the local and 5th of the world: Jonathan Christie. The first of the games followed the tone of the semifinal, with the Canadian athlete securing the victory by the minimum. By the second game, the local couldn’t keep up the pace with an emboldened Victor, who was dominating the court in a commanding fashion. He saw victory getting closer with each point, something he would finally achieve after 39 minutes (21-19, 21.8). Lai emerged from his epic journey with the medal and the glory of an entire country and an entire region.

From Badminton Pan America, we want to congratulate Victor Lai, as well as the other Pan Am athletes who took part in the competition.
