From June 30 to July 5, the YONEX Canada Open 2026 brought together players from 27 countries at the Markham Pan Am Centre, where athletes competed for valuable BWF World Ranking points and a prize purse on the HSBC BWF World Tour. Pan American representatives once again demonstrated their competitiveness, collecting five bronze medals across three events.
Competing in front of a home crowd, newly crowned World No. 9 Victor Lai returned to international action following his historic Indonesia Open triumph. The Canadian advanced confidently through the draw with victories over Finland’s Joakim Oldorff and Kalle Koljonen before defeating Chinese Taipei’s Wang Po-Wei in the quarterfinals. His impressive run ended in the semifinals against Japan’s Yudai Okimoto, earning Lai a well-deserved bronze medal in his first tournament since entering the BWF World Ranking Top 10.
Fellow Canadian Michelle Li also reached the semifinals after overcoming India’s Anmol Kharb, Brazil’s Juliana Vieira, and Chinese Taipei’s Huang Ching Ping. Her campaign concluded against Japan’s Riko Gunji, adding another strong performance to an already remarkable season that has seen Li return to the world’s Top 10.

The United States celebrated three medals during the week, led by Beiwen Zhang, who secured bronze in Women’s Singles. Zhang looked on course for another deep tournament run after defeating Korea’s Kim Min-ji, India’s Aakarshi Kashyap, and Denmark’s Amalie Schulz. However, an ankle injury forced the American to retire during her semifinal against Denmark’s Line Christophersen, bringing an unfortunate end to an excellent campaign.

American pair Francesca Corbett and Jennie Gai added another bronze medal in Women’s Doubles after advancing to the semifinals with victories over pairs from Germany, Japan, and Chinese Taipei before falling to eventual finalists Hinata Suzuki and Nao Yamakita of Japan.

Gai returned to the podium in Mixed Doubles alongside Presley Smith. The American duo overcame opponents from Canada, Brazil, and England in three hard-fought matches before their impressive run ended in the semifinals against Chinese Taipei’s Liu Kuang-Heng and Hsu Yin-Hui.

The YONEX Canada Open once again showcased the growing level of Pan American badminton on the international stage. With five medals and several quarterfinal and semifinal appearances, athletes from the region continued to demonstrate their ability to compete against many of the world’s strongest players.
Badminton Pan Am congratulates all participating athletes on their performances and extends its best wishes to Beiwen Zhang for a full and speedy recovery.
