Poveda and Tavares Won Medals in Tokyo

Giuliana Poveda and Vitor Tavares took the podium at Japan Para badminton International 2020, official test event of the first Para badminton competition at Paralympic Games, held from November 13 to 17.

World Champs, Giuliana Poveda, won two gold medals in this tournament. She got the title in Women’s Singles SH6, after defeating athletes from Chinese Taipei and Ukraine, and in Mixed Doubles with Nagar Krishna (IND). Both were exhibition events for the few entries, only 3 per event.

Brazil’s Vitor Tavares got bronze in Mixed Doubles SH6 with Nina Kozlova (UKR). In Singles, Vitor reached the quarterfinals after leading Group D but losing to Chun Yim Wong (HKG).

There were 15 players from our region participating in this Japan Para badminton International 2019 and Olivia Meier (CAN) also reached quarterfinals in Women’s Singles SL4.

Also Pan Am Technical Officials had participation in this Paralympic Games test event. Our Technical Officials Chair, Mr Enrique Charadan (CUB) was Deputy Referee in this event, and Mr Phillip Ayoung-Chee (USA) and Mr. Hilton Dos Santos (BRA) officiated as umpires.

Congratulations to all our players for their great performance and we encourage them in this qualification period for the very first participation of Para badminton at Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. Keep going!!
