Last Sunday, November 26, the Para-Badminton World Championships came to its end in the city of USLAN, South Korea, with 264 players representing 41 countries. Our Pan American region was represented by 11 players (4 women and 7 men) coming from 5 countries: BRA (1), CAN (3), GUA (1), PER (4), USA (2).
Pan American athletes achieved an outstanding performance, being Giuliana Poveda (Peru) the most outstanding, because she won the silver medal in the WS SS6 event and two bronze medals more, one in WD next to her partner Randika Doling from Sri-Lanka, an the other in XD, this time with Niall Mc Veigh from Ireland.
Giuliana achieved this result by overcoming, in the WS Singles SS6 event, their oppositors from Egypt, Poland and Sri Lanka at the group stage. In Semi finals Giuliana beat number 2 of the World Ranking, Rebeca Bedford (England), with partials 21-17 and 21-13. However, she could not overcome the English Rachel Choong, (number 1 of the World Ranking), and fell 21-15 and 21-7, thus obtaining the silver medal.
In Women Doubles SS6, Poveda and Randika Doling from Sri Lanka, won the bronze medal after qualifying second place in Group B and facing the best pair of the competition at semi finals, the english pair Choong and Bedford, with whom they fell 21-11 and 21-14.
Meanwhile Pilar Jaurequi WH2 (PER), won her group in the round of all against all to move to the Knock Out round, finally placing in the top 8.
Raul Anguiano SL4 (GUA), Marcelo Alves WH1 (BRA) and Pascal Lapointe SL4 (CAN) went to the rounds of 32 in their respective classifications.
Country final results: China obtained the first place, with 4 Gold, 7 Silver and 4 Bronze, followed by England with 4 – 3 – 1 and Indonesia with 4 – 2 – 4. Peru ranked 13th among the 41 participating countries, achieving 1 silver and two bronze, placing itself ahead of traditional countries such as Germany, Spain, Turkey, Switzerland, Scotland.
