Junior Champions – Pan Am Junior 2018

Exciting day was lived in the Finals of the XXVII Pan Am Junior Championships 2018, tournament held in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, where athletes from Canada, USA, Peru, Mexico and host Brazil took the podium in the different competition categories.

USA was the country that won more medals in this tournament (38), being 11 gold, 11 silver and 16 bronze, in addition to the bronze medal in the Team Event held last week. Veronica Yang won 3 gold medals in the U13 category, Kalea Sheung won 3 medals at the U15 competition (1 gold and 2 bronze), and Kathik Kalyanasundaram had an excellent tournament in the U19 category, winning the silver medal in singles.

Canada also won a large number of medals (34), 11 gold, 8 silver and 15 bronze medals, in addition to the first place in the Team Event. Lyric Su (U11), Oliver Chen (U11) and Jacqueline Cheung (U17) conquered their categories winning gold medals in Singles, Doubles and Mixed.

Host Brazil added 13 medals (3 gold, 1 silver and 9 bronze), in addition to the silver medal in the Team Event, highlighting William Guimaraes with the 2 gold medals that he won in the U17 category (Singles and Doubles with Rafael Faria). Sania Lima also had an excellent championship, conquering bronze medals in Singles and Doubles with Sayane Lima. In addition, Jaqueline Lima, Pan Am Player qualified to Buenos Aires 2018, won bronze medal in Doubles U19 with Samia Lima.

Fernanda Saponara (PER), also qualified to the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, won a bronze medal for Peru within the 13 medals they won (5 silver and 8 bronze). In addition, Nicolás Macías returned to add a Pan-American medal in Doubles, this time with Santiago de la Oliva.

Mexico took the podium twice. Adelina Quiñones and Nicole Marquez won the bronze medal in U19 Doubles, while Aldair Ayala and Angel Ramirez did the same in Doubles U15.

Talia Ng (CAN) and Jonathan Matias (BRA) were the U19 category champions. Ryan Zheng and Winston Tsai (USA) in Men’s Doubles, Crystal Lai and Wendy Zhang in Women’s Doubles and Kevin Wang and Wendy Zhang (CAN) are also the Champions of this main category.

The Award Ceremony was led by Mr. Zarko Cukic, Chair of Events of BPAC, and Mr. Francisco Ferraz, President of Badminton Brasil Federation, and started with the awarding of a special recognition to the tournament Referees: Dionne Haynes (BAR) and Cassio Toledo (BRA). As well as the Pan Am Umpire of the Year award, Fabio Lopes (BRA).
