For the Glory – Pan Am Games 2019

Athletes from Canada, Brazil and United States will look for the glory at this Pan Am Games 2019.

The Finals of the XVIII Pan Am Games 2019 will be held this August 2 at the Sport National Village of San Luis in Lima, Peru.

The semifinal day began with the match between Rachel Honderich & Kristen Tsai (CAN) and Tamires Santos & Fabiana Silva (BRA). The Brazilian duo got a comfortable victory (21-5 and 21-8) and will look for their first medal in the Pan American Games when they face Kuei-Ya Chen & Jamie Hsu, who beat Brazil’s Samia Lima & Jaqueline Lima in a tough match of 3 games. (17-21, 21-12 and 21-18).

A shoulder injury left Kevin Cordon out of competition, Kevin retired during the third game of the match  against Brian Yang (CAN).

“I am proud of my game, to be able to trace the match after losing the first game. It was unexpected, I hope Kevin recovers soon from the injury. Before the match I studied Kevin’s game a lot and I could do my best to win it. Now there is one more game to hopefully win the gold.” – Brian after the Semifinal.

Pan Am Junior Champion 2019, Yang, will face Ygor Coelho (BRA) who won against Jason Ho-Shue in the Semifinales (22-/20, 22/20 y 21-8).

On the other hand, Michelle Li had no trouble moving to the Finals. Li defeated Iris Wang 21-10 and 21-5 and will compete once again with Rachel Honderich, repeating the Toronto 2015 final.

“I am very excited to be in two finals and to be able to get those two medals for Canada. It’s good to face Michelle again 4 years later. She has been doing great international performance and will be a very tough opponent. I hope to get the gold medal gold, everything is possible but it will be very tough.” said Honderich after her Semifinals match.

Pan Am duo Champions 2019, Jason Ho-Shue and Nyl Yakura reached the Finals after defeating Osleni Guerrero and Leodannis Martinez 23-21 y 21-17 and will face USA duo, Phillip Chew and Ryan Chew who overcome Fabricio Farias and Francieltos Farias 22-20 y 21-13.

Yakura also secured 2 finals, in Doubles and along with Kristen Tsai in Mixed Doubles. They defeated Howard Shu and Paula Lynn Obanana 21-15 y 21-15 and will face Joshua Hurlburt-Yu & Josephine Wu who overcome Fabricio Farias and Jaqueline Lima 22-20, 21-17 y 21-13).

“We are happy for this victory, being this one of the last games we will play as a duo, it is very exciting to reach the final. For tomorrow we do not have an established strategy, we do not think much about the results, we just come to give our best and enjoy this tournament.” – Yakura and Tsai after de Semifinals.

In this way, athletes from Canada will play the final 5 of the tournament, having the option to get 5 gold medals, however, athletes from United States and Ygor from Brazil, also want to reach the gold for their country.
