Victor Lai is one of the best players in the world and undoubtedly the brightest talent to emerge from Canada in recent years. Now Lai has the opportunity to reach the final, a stage that he couldn’t claim in the previous edition.
Victor’s performance has been simply impressive; up to this point, the world number 7 has found his place in the semifinals with high expectations of reaching the final.
His journey would begin against Korea’s Jeon, whom he defeated with a dominant scoreline inversely proportional to the time played, which was a grueling game of almost an hour (21-12, 21-17). The next round would pit him against a Pan-American athlete, USA’s Alcala. Despite his best efforts, the U.S. athlete proved to be little trouble for the Canadian standout (21-7, 21-14); after Alcala, Victor saw a towering Singaporean wall rising in front of him.
In the Round of 16, Victor clashed with Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew. This tense encounter between the world numbers 7 and 13 went right down to the wire, with the finest details tipping the scales in the Canadian’s favor, just as it did a year ago, when Victor defeated Yew for the same score (22-20, 21-18). Determined not to suffer the same fate as last time, Victor advanced, fully aware that the path ahead would only get steeper.
The quarterfinals were proof of this; here, Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke challenged him to a 54-minute battle, much like the Singaporean. Lai knew that any mistake could cost him the elimination, something that was seen in the final stretch of the last game when the Dane was dangerously closing the gap (21-19, 21-18).
Memories
Victor’s current path inevitably brings to mind his remarkable run in the previous World Championships, where he reached this exact same stage. Curiously, he also dispatched Jeon (KOR) (21-17, 21-13) in the Round of 16 and Yew (SGP) (22-20, 21-18) in the quarterfinals during that campaign. However, on that occasion, his journey was cut short by world number one, China’s Shi Yu Qi.
Overcoming Destiny
Now the championship will give him a European rival, ALEX LANIER. Despite being two spots ahead of him in the rankings, nothing is said for Victor; he will have to be at his superlative level both physically and mentally to be able to access the final and surpass his performance from a year ago.
